Foxwoods Casino Workers Suffer in Legal Stand-Off

Smoking bans are usually enforced by state and local officials. But what happens when a business falls outside the law’s jurisdiction? Foxwoods Resort Casino in Connecticut is owned by the Mashantucket Pequot tribe and local indoor smoking laws do not apply to businesses with Native American sovereignty. While most local bars, restaurants, and indoor public spaces are smoke-free, casinos are some of the last to remain, and the employees are suffering. Casino workers in spaces without smoking restrictions are exposed to secondhand smoke on a daily basis.

Casino owners have compromised on restricted smoking areas, but lawmakers worry that any steps toward a full smoking ban will be met with a major push back.
